A Christmas Tree Decorating Poll

If you have kids and a Christmas tree, please answer the following poll.

When decorating your Christmas tree you:

A.  leave everything exactly where your kids hang it, even if 2/3 of the ornaments are on the same 1/7 of the tree. You would never do anything to stifle their creative nature, right?

B.  let your kids have their fun then go back and rearrange things when they aren't looking. You don't want to hurt their feelings, but damn, 2/3 of the ornaments on the same 1/7 of the tree is lopsided and makes you a bit twitchy.

C.  carefully direct the placement of each ornament. Thank goodness you have kids that actually listen and follow directions, right?

D.  convince the children that there is a tree decorating fairy and one morning they will wake up and magically the tree will be decorated, then you do it yourself after they are asleep. Because OMFG, 2/3 of the ornaments on the same 1/7 of the tree! Do I need to say anymore?

E. ornaments? Are you crazy? My monsters broke all of ours ages ago.

My careful calculations tell me that I have approximately 33 regular readers. So I'm expecting 33 responses in my comments. 'mkay?

  1. LOL - I am a definite B. . .I WANT to let them do it all - but the OCD-Type A part of me can't handle it!

  2. As a regular reader I feel like I should comment, but no kids. Instead, my tree is only decorated on the top 2/3 to keep the cats from pulling it over while playing with the fun dangly ornaments I placed there for them.

  3. Hanukah peeps here, but yeah, I'm sure I've tried for the artful blending of BOTH directing/modeling and flat-out controlling in similar scenarios... MERRY CHRISTMAS, Kris!

  4. When i was a kid, my mother would let us put up the ornaments anywhere, but, she would also direct us to make sure they got all over the tree. We had our favorite ornaments that we made and could put up anywhere. We also had some delicate ornaments that we would hand to mom and dad to put on the tree. Most of the delicates stayed toward the top, where as the kiddy ornaments went towards the bottom.

  5. B. Mine never noticed if I moved things later, they just assumed they were responsible for such a fabulously decorated tree! Laura

  6. B. Mine usually don't notice. Occasionally my daughter does, but I tell they fell off and I had to fix them. It works :)

  7. Not a regular reader, but hope you don't mind if I comment. The top part of our tree is "mine" - decorated with my precious glass ornaments. The bottom gets done as my son wants - the pictures with 20 ornaments on a branch are too cute to change, and it'll be a conversation point when he's old enough for me to embarrass him!

  8. Kids ornaments wherever he wants, but he's not really in to decorating the tree much anymore. We're going to Ohio and Michigan for the holidays this year, so the antique silver tree is staying in the box.

  9. I have breakable ornaments and kid ornaments that are virtually indestructible. The kids can hang theirs wherever they want, even if they have two on a branch. I hang the rest up higher, so that they don't fall off the branch or get broken by either the kids or cats...although it's been less of an issue now that my kids are older.

  10. Doesn't matter where the ornaments go. The cats will knock them all off at night and I will put them back on the next day.

  11. B here. The kids put them where they want, except for the breakables that go up high. We also have a cat to knock them off, so the get rearranged regularly anyways.

  12. Depends on the year - sometimes A sometimes B and never C or D - we have had some broken ornaments but most of those have been due to a lack of a properly balanced tree that eventually fell over.

  13. This made me laugh out loud! I put special ornaments at the top of the tree and did some directing/rearranging on the rest. I told my 3 that we had to put non-breakables on the bottom so the cats couldn't do a lot of damage. =)

  14. Ok, so I am a bit late with my response...but B. I want my toddler to feel involved with decorating, so he gets the non-breakable ornaments. I put all the fragile ones (and sentimental ones) towards the top and he gets bottom portion of the tree.
